NOTE:  Enlisted and Mustered In dates are often different for the same person.  Enlisted is considered the date you signed the papers;  Mustered In is when you reported for duty.  Also, Age in this listing refers to Age at Enlistment.

NOTE:  Many records of those who are listed by Smith 1881, as belonging to the NY First Dragoons, actually joined units known by other names, but later were incorporated into the NY First Dragoons.  An example of this is those that enlisted in the NY 1st Cavalry Regiment, are later identified as being in the NY First Dragoons.

NOTE:  You will find some names in this listing that may not be Lima natives.   Some men were from Honeoye Falls, North Bloomfield, Avon, Livonia and West Bloomfield.  These men are included in the Lima, NY Civil War Veterans Listing because they satisfied at least one of the following criteria: They enlisted in the US Military in Lima, NY between 1861 and 1864; They were residents of Lima, NY after 1865;  They are in Lima Historical photographs of Civil War Veterans;  They were members of the Grand Army of the Republic Lewis Gates Post 369 Honeoye Falls and Lima.  Anyone meeting one of the preceeding criteria are considered members of Lima's historical past and should be recognized as such.

Note:  Not all of Lima's Civil War Veterans are buried in Lima Cemeteries.  Some are interred elsewhere, have just a stone here in Lima (body interred elsewhere) or the burial site is unknown at this time.  As new information becomes available, this listing will be updated.  Corrections, omissions and new information relating to Lima Civil War Veterans are encouraged and always welcomed.  Please contact me at: dmorgan21@rochester.rr.com or (585) 624-5902.  Thank you.  Douglas Morgan, Lima Historian.

The American Civil War (1861–1865), also known as the War Between the States, and most popular in the North, War of the Rebellion, was a civil war in the United States of America.  Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, also known as "the Confederacy".  Led by Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy fought for its independence from the United States.  The U.S.  federal government was supported by twenty mostly-Northern free states in which slavery already had been abolished, and by five slave states that became known as the border states.  These twenty-five states, referred to as the Union, had a much larger base of population and industry than the South.  After four years of bloody, devastating warfare (mostly within the Southern states), the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was outlawed everywhere in the nation.  The restoration of the Union, and the Reconstruction Era (14 years of Northern Occupation) that followed, dealt with issues that remained unresolved for generations.

New York state contributed the most men during the Civil War and suffered the most casualties, with more than 53,000 killed out of the 500,000 from New York who served.
1st New York Dragoons

Civil War

The most famous of the Western New York troops was the First New York Dragoons, (originally formed as the 130th NY Volunteers) which was originally recruited in Portageville, as an infantry regiment, but because most of the members were farm boys, of the Genesee Valley, and accustomed to riding and handling horses, it was transformed to a cavalry regiment, which saw service from the beginning of the war to the end.

Of the, many young men who, Enlisted federal forces from the Town of Lima, the majority, saw service with this regiment.  And the writer of this article (Mabel Jenks, 1960) has vivid memories of the Decoration Day parades of many years ago, with William A.  Ferris, the Color Sergeant of that regiment, mounted on a horse leading the parades, and a number of solid businessmen of this town, who also were members of that regiment, following their equestrian flag-bearer on foot.  Note:  At the Battle of Dobbs Tavern, when 91 men were killed in two hours, William A. Ferris was the only color bearer to survive.  William Ferris is also said to have witnessed Lee's surrender.

Erected 1903 at Portage, NY, this monument to the 1st NY Dragoons was later moved across the Genesee River to Letchworth Park

POST's  LAST SURVIVOR, 88, WON'T LET YOUNGER HANDS PLACE FLOWERS

"Of Course I'll Do It", He Says of Task, His For Past Decade

"Of course I'll do it".  Thus did Charles Chambers, 88, and last survivor of Lewis Gates Post, GAR, last week set aside any theories that younger hands should place Memorial Day flags and flowers on veterans' graves in North Bloomfield.

For the last decade, this part of the annual preparations for Memorial Day services has been the task of Veteran Chambers, still hale and hearty despite his age.  But he doesn't confine his activities alone to memories of comrades in arms, but travels Western New York without asking assistance of anyone.

Mr.  Chambers ran away from home, July 18, 1864, when 16, to enlist, and served for the duration of the Civil War.

As the sole survivor in the Honeoye Falls district of that great conflict, Mr.  Chambers, who for seven years as commander of Lewis Gates Post, will lead the Memorial Day parade Saturday morning.

Was Quartermaster of the regiment. Now living in Lima.  In 1893, the town was without a railroad of any nature up to 1892, although it had periodical attacks of "Railroad Fever", when numerous railroads were placed on paper to all kinds of points. One of them in the early 40's was the proposal to construct a railroad from Rochester to Elmira, passing through lima. The trustees of the Seminary protested against "profaning" the peaceful village by means of a noisy, dirty railroad, and campaigned vigorously against it.  None of the several railroad proposals got to the completion stage until 1891 when a party of capitalists came to town with a proposal that brought the subscriptions necessary to underwrite the project, and the Lima-Honeoye Falls Railroad was launched upon a sea of watered stock, and Lima was thought to be once more on the map.  The road was at first proposed to run right up Rochester Street its whole length, and Lima had a fair chance of a steam railroad running up a principal street of the town, hauling all sorts of cargo from hay and grain to malodorous fertilizer, since the residents along the whole right of way, with only three exceptions, had cheerfully signed a deed in front of their premises, such was the craze for a railroad in Lima.  It was not until the tracks were laid clear to the village line that the route was changed, and then only because a public spirited citizen, Jacob S. Galentine, who lived directly across the street from the "Corner Grocery" on Rochester Street, had the temerity to secure an injunction against the company, and by so doing saved the beautiful, tree-shaded street from being destroyed.  Instead of being lauded as a public benefactor, however, he was subjected to all kinds of abuse, his house was stoned and he was threatened with personal violence, not daring to venture outdoors after dark, and was even hung in effigy along with two other public spirited citizens, one of them a woman, who also defied the railroad promoters, all this being, as a contemporary newspaper expressed it, "Railroad Hydrophobia".  In 1890, he is counted in the Special Schedule - Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and Widows census.   Jacob S. Galentine was born 12 August 1834 in East Rush, NY, son of John and Elizabeth Stull Galentine and died 05 December 1905.  His occupation was listed in 1862 as farmer.  His first wife was Anna Callaghan and his second wife was Mary Crouch.    Pine Hill Cemetery Plot A7 Rush, NY.  In 1865, the Lima Town Clerk entered "Was in the Army of the Potomac for one year.  Then transferred to General Hooks command of the Army of the Cumberland.  Detached from the command April 11, 1862 to the distribution command at Nashville, Tennessee.  Still living.  Present P.O. address Lima, NY."  1865 Record of Soldiers & Officers
